Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy aims to provide you with balance, wellness, confidence and independence in the presence of persistent discomfort in the muscles, joints, nerves and digestive system. Some of the specific conditions that may be improved by physiotherapy include digestive problems, knees that are stiff and painful, persistent back; neck or shoulder pain; joint pains, lumbago, muscle cramp or spasm, fibromyalgia, neuralgia and minor sports injuries and tensions. Physiotherapy is also beneficial to those with reduced mobility. For example, it may help to improve overall balance and confidence on your feet, leg strength (to enable movement around your home and community), maintenance of independence while living with stroke and to meet your own expectations following surgery.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A PHYSIOTHERAPY CONSULTATION

A physiotherapist uses soft tissue manipulation to restore overall balance and wellbeing in the body, particularly for the muscles, joints, nerves and digestive system. During the initial on-on-one consultation, your health goals and previous health experience are recorded and an assessment of movement is taken. This may take between 45 minutes to an hour. You will be provided with an overview of your current condition and a personalised, solution-focused approach to its management. You will then be able to monitor progress and effectiveness of your health programme. Activity programmes and advice combine the latest research with a flexible and holistic approach to maximize your quality of life and independence.
Follow up appointments are up to 30 minutes duration and based on individual need. Group-based physical activity and education programmes may also be offered.
The aims of Physiotherapy are to help you:

  • Recover movement and normal use of your body
  • Reduce or manage symptoms
  • Realise improved confidence and coping strategies
  • Return to usual daily and/or work related activities
  • Resume normal family and community interaction
  • Regain a sense of wellbeing
