What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional Therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual healthcare.  Typical priorities in nutritional therapy consultations are support to achieve optimum energy levels, healthy blood sugar balance, emotional and psychological wellbeing, optimum gastrointestinal health, weight management, support for a sporting lifestyle and tolerance to a broad range of food groups.  A nutritional therapist will use the extensive nutritional science evidence base to establish an individualised nutrition and lifestyle plan that is both achievable and realistic.

What to expect from a Nutritional Therapy Consultation

Nutritional Therapists recognise that each person is an individual with unique healthcare needs.  During a  consultation, the therapist will ask detailed questions about diet, current health concerns, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, medical and family history, physical activity and use of medication and supplements.  Rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach, a nutritional therapist will use the extensive nutritional science evidence base to create an agreed nutrition strategy that is designed to fit every lifestyle and budget.  Nutritional supplements may be recommended.  Changes can be made all at once or gradually, you set the pace.

The initial nutritional therapy consultation lasts approximately 90 minutes.  A follow-up consultation lasts around 60 minutes and occurs ideally four weeks after the initial consultation in order to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.  Further follow-ups may be recommended at the needs of the individual.  Our practitioners are available to answer any questions or concerns that arise in between visits.

Nutritional Testing

A full range of biochemical testing is available which can help the therapist generate a more targeted nutrition programme.  Some of the most popular tests include the following:

  • DNA testing for nutritional insights
  • food intolerance testing
  • full thyroid assessment
  • adrenal stress assessment
  • female hormone panel
  • hair mineral analysis
  • digestive and parasitology testing
  • cardiovascular screen
  • blood sugar analysis

We use several external laboratories which process our tests and are thus able to offer almost any kind of metabolic testing.  It is important to note that these tests are only available alongside a nutritional therapy consultation as this will ensure accurate interpretation of the results.  Further, an experienced therapist can suggest the most appropriate tests for each person only after they have taken a full health history during a consultation.
